What purpose should your product images serve in your online store?
On a product page, images must do two things: showcase your brand’s identity and answer specific questions about the product. For furniture and home and living products, these include aspects such as proportions, finishes, craftsmanship, and variations. 3D product visualization can be used to create these views specifically for that purpose.
This guide will help you choose image types, product data, and output formats. It distinguishes between pre-rendered CGI images, interactive 3D models, and AR. You don't necessarily need all three to run a successful online store.
Where CGI Is Useful in E-Commerce and What Its Limitations Are
A rendering is, first and foremost, an image generated from a digital model. It can be used on a product page just like a photograph. A rotatable 3D view, on the other hand, is a separate technical application. Which solution is right for you depends on your customers’ questions and your existing online store.
- Show product details: Planned views reveal the shape, connections, or workmanship. You determine which details are needed based on the product and the purchase decision.
- Keep variants consistent: Consistent camera and lighting settings make colors and finishes easier to compare. Each variant must match the product actually offered.
- Assessing the effort involved: Modeling and creating materials take time initially. Whether CGI is cost-effective for your series depends on the available data, subject matter, and potential for future reuse. A comparison of CGI and product photography explains the different requirements.
- Plan Before Launch: Images can be created before mass production begins once the design, dimensions, and materials have been sufficiently finalized. Any changes to the product must be incorporated into the model.
- Assess resources realistically: CGI can avoid sets and transport for individual images, but it needs data preparation, computing power, and sometimes physical samples. That alone does not establish a better environmental footprint.
- Organize image sets: For each item number, note the required angles, variants, and details. The 3D Content Planner helps with this organization. Including more images only makes sense if they answer additional questions.

Product images, 360-degree views, AR, or animation?
- Static product images: A cutout rendering shows the product without a distracting background. Room scenes convey the context of use. Detail shots highlight materials, connections, or control surfaces.
- 360-degree views: A sequence of images can rotate the product step by step. An interactive 3D model allows for a freer view, depending on the application. These are different production and integration tasks.
- Augmented Reality: A model designed for this purpose is superimposed onto the camera view of a real-world space on supported devices. The scale, placement, and display must be verified.
- Product animation: A 3D animation can explain a function, a design, or a movement. Static images may be sufficient for a simple color comparison.
Check your store’s requirements before production. Images, videos, and interactive models need different integration methods. Shopify, for example, lists GLB and USDZ for 3D models and requires a theme that supports the media type. Its official product media guide explains the requirements. Support on other ecommerce platforms and custom themes must be checked separately.
Developing Visual Language and Product Information Together
Danthree Studio combines creative direction and CGI for furniture, home and living, and tech products. For your store, we agree on which images explain the product, which express the brand, and which information belongs in the accompanying copy.
3D Models as a Foundation
For 3D modeling of your products, we review existing CAD data, drawings, photos, and material references. One model can be the basis for several images. New dimensions, upholstery shapes, or components require suitable changes and another check against the references.

Show product details within a distinctive brand setting
In 3D product visualization, we plan perspectives, lighting, and materials for each specific application. An overview shows the silhouette; a close-up, for example, makes an edge, seam, or surface texture clearly visible. A room scene places the product in a design context.
These images should complement each other. Work with your team to determine which version is being shown, which details are key to the purchasing decision, and which setting fits the brand. An atmospheric scene is no substitute for clear information about variants or dimensions.
For the Barbas project with product images and animation, we worked with tête de la course to develop virtual brand spaces, materials, and different views. A scroll-driven animation moves from a wireframe model to the finished fireplace, showing variants and an exploded view. The project demonstrates how visual language and product structure work together; it does not establish a measured sales impact.

Explaining Movement in a Targeted Way
Animation is useful when it's difficult to convey a movement or sequence using individual still images. Determine what you want to make clearer in the end before planning camera movements and duration.
For product animations in the Home & Living category, we can reuse existing models and scenes after reviewing them. A rotating image sequence and an explanatory video require different workflows and output formats.
Assess the benefit for the specific product. A video is not inherently more effective than an image. On the product page, it should add information and remain clear on small screens.
Videos can also be created for 3D online stores
Augmented Reality (AR) In E-Commerce
AR product renderings can give you an idea of how an object will look in your own space. To do this, a suitable 3D model is superimposed over the camera image in a supported application. The rendering depends, among other things, on the device, the environment, and the processed model data.
AR does not replace checking dimensions or a physical material sample. It does not guarantee a lower return rate either. Assess whether it helps your customers through actual use and feedback.
Model preparation, technical integration, and tests in the online store must be agreed in advance. Delivering renderings does not automatically include an AR application or development of the store.
AR in E-Commerce: Display Digital Visualizations in Real-World Environments
From product data to finished ecommerce assets
A clear process links the visual concept to the verifiable characteristics of the product:
- Purpose and Visual Language: We’ll discuss the products, target audience, and intended use. This includes your brand’s visual identity, the required imagery, and the store’s requirements.
- Modeling: CAD data, dimensioned drawings, reference photos, and, if necessary, physical samples form the basis. We clarify any missing information and visible details before proceeding with the design.
- Materials: For digital surfaces and materials, we match texture, sheen, and color to the available references. Wood grain, fabric, and reflections need different steps.
- Space, light, and camera: We develop views to suit the product and brand. For a series of variants, we decide which settings remain consistent and where a different angle is needed.
- Verification and Approval: Shape, dimensions, materials, and details are checked against the reference standards. Corrections are part of the process. Photorealism alone is not proof of product accuracy.
- Delivery and identification: After approval, we deliver the agreed assets. Item number, variant, view, and filename should correspond clearly. Interactive models are also checked in the intended application.

Discuss product images for your store
Tell us which products and variants you want to show, what data you already have, and where the assets will be used. If you do not yet have an image list, we can first define the purpose of the images and their visual direction together.
Here's how to decide where to start
Start with a product group and the questions that remain unanswered. Often, a clear overview, appropriate detailed images, and easy-to-understand variants are more important than an additional interactive feature.
Before publishing, check that the image, product description, and selected variant match. Plan appropriate image sizes for smartphones and desktops without unnecessarily losing visible product details. Image quality and load time go hand in hand.
Next, monitor whether customers are engaging with the media and what product-related questions continue to arise. When comparing sales or returns, also take into account price, delivery time, product selection, and other changes in the store. It would be premature to attribute any effect solely to the new images without a reliable comparison.
If you need help with this, we'll work with you to develop the creative direction and visual concept, along with the appropriate CGI production. The starting point will always be your product and the purpose the image is intended to serve.
